M, 8/16: Orientation Day. Seats were assigned, and introductions took place.

T, 8/17: (all) (1) We went over and discussed course details and classroom expectations. (2) We then discussed this web page and the resources it does and will feature.

HW: (1) Procure necessary class materials as explained today.

W, 8/18 (evens) + R, 8/19 (odds): (1) We went over and discussed your ancillary novel requirement. (2) We then signed up for Remind. (3) We then discussed vocabulary: books, test format, study method, and the meanings and pronunciation of the words in unit 1. Your study grid was distributed along with the unit 1 extra notes and explanations that I provide.

HW: (1) Have your ancillary novel ready to show Mr. Alig no later than Monday, 8/30. As soon as you have procured your ancillary novel, stop in to Mr. Alig's room any morning to show him the book you have chosen. (2) Study vocabulary (including definitions) according to the schedule and method taught in class. (3) Sign up for Remind if you did not successfully do so today during class.

F, 8/20 (all): (1) We went over and discussed Q1E1 (quarter 1, essay #1). (2) We then discussed the brainstorming process and the prewriting process. (3) Mr. Alig then offered his own prewriting as an example of how students should do their own prewriting.

HW: (1) Have your ancillary novel ready to show Mr. Alig no later than Monday, 8/30. As soon as you have procured your ancillary novel, stop in to Mr. Alig's room any morning to show him the book you have chosen. (2) Study vocabulary (including definitions) according to the schedule and method taught in class. (3) Brainstorm ideas, and then choose your best three about which to prewrite--and write out your thoughts for these three like Mr. Alig did in his example during class. Bring a PRINTOUT of your prewriting, formatted and showing the same effort and thoroughness as exemplified by Mr. Alig during class, to class on MONDAY.

M, 8/23 (all): (1) We learned how to use your prewriting to write the body paragraphs of Q1E1 by looking at a sample body paragraph written by Mr. Alig. (2) We also learned how to write a closed thesis statement for Q1E1 based on your prewriting.

HW: (1) Have your ancillary novel ready to show Mr. Alig no later than Monday, 8/30. As soon as you have procured your ancillary novel, stop in to Mr. Alig's room any morning to show him the book you have chosen. (2) Study vocabulary (including definitions) according to the schedule and method taught in class. T, 8/24 (odds) + W, 8/25 (evens): (1) We reviewed vocabulary unit 1 definitions and then completed the "Choosing the Right Word" and "Completing the Sentence" exercises. (2) We also learned test day procedures in preparation for next weeik's vocabulary test.

R, 8/26 (odds) + F, 8/27 (evens): (1) We finished our work with vocabulary unit 1 exercises from the previous class. (2) Next, we did a thesis statement and body paragraph revision activity to see what did and did not work in your own thesis statement and body paragraphs.

HW: (1) Have your ancillary novel ready to show Mr. Alig no later than Monday, 8/30. As soon as you have procured your ancillary novel, stop in to Mr. Alig's room any morning to show him the book you have chosen. (2) Study vocabulary (including definitions) according to the schedule and method taught in class. (3) Revise your thesis and all three body paragraphs as necessary by Monday. No need to bring a printout to class on Monday.

R, 9/2 (odds) + F, 9/3 (evens): (1) We learned how to write the introductory paragraph and the conclusion paragraph for Q1E1.

HW: (1) Study vocabulary (including definitions) according to the schedule and method taught in class. (2) Bring a printout of your entire essay (all five paragraphs--in order) to your next class meeting.

T, 9/7 (odds) + W, 9/8 (evens): (1) We revised Q1E1 introductory paragraph and conclusion paragraph. (2) We also discussed the grading rubric that will be used for Q1E1, including the bell-ringer editing rules to check for in your essay. (3) Last, we reviewed the format and purpose of the body paragraphs and the overall structure of the essay.

HW: (1) Study vocabulary (including definitions) according to the schedule and method taught in class. (2) Submit a stapled copy of your entire revised and edited essay in room 2 prior to 7:45 A.M. on Thursday, 9/9. If you do not come to school that day, it must be emailed (as an MS Word attachment) to Mr. Alig prior to 7:45 A.M. (aliggj@elderhs.net). (3) The vocabulary unit 2 sentence review sheet was distributed. Answers are posted on my web page.

R, 9/9 (odds) + F, 9/10 (evens): (1) In-class work: "Choosing the Right Word" and "Completing the Sentence." (2) Vocabulary Unit 1 tests were returned.

HW: (1) Study vocabulary (including definitions) according to the schedule and method taught in class. (2) Review bell ringer rules. (3) Check answers to exercises, which are posted under the "Vocabulary Unit 2 Resources" link. If you have any questions about definitions, synonyms, antonyms, or answers to any of the sentence exercises, there will be a vocabulary help session beginning at 7:00 A.M. Monday morning. Stop by to ask any questions you may have. You may arrive at any time; you are not required to be present by 7 A.M.

R, 10/14 (odds) + F, 10/15 (evens): (1) We went over your Q1E3 prewriting, making sure everyone's would offer enough material to explain in the body paragraphs and conferencing to ensure the quality of your prewriting. (3) We then learned how to structure and write the thesis statement and body paragraphs for this essay.

HW: (1) Draft your thesis statement and all three body paragraphs; bring a printout to class on Tuesday/Wednesday (whichever of those two days day your class meets).
