Effective Writing: Today in Class (S1)

T, 8/17 (all): (1) We discussed the course expectations and goals along with classroom expectations. (2) We then signed up for Remind. (3) Last, we took a short diagnostic test.

HW: (1) Finish diagnostic test; bring completed test to class tomorrow. (2) Bring in a newspaper tomorrow, if at all possible.

W, 8/18 (evens): (0.5) We signed up for Remind. (1) We discussed BR #1 and the three editing rules it comprised. (2) Next, we went over the answers to the diagnostic test. (3) We then discussed the six writing purposes and looked for newspaper examples, sharing what we found. (4) Then, we did a 1 Topic=18 Topics activity, culminating in my doing six 5-minute quick writes on a topic, each quick-write focusing on a different purpose for the same topic.

HW: (1) Fill in your 1 Topic = 18 Topics handout based on one topic of your choice.

F, 8/20 (all): (1) We discussed the BR . (2) Next, we went over 1 Topic=18 Topics activity, culminating in my doing six 5-minute quick writes on a topic, each quick-write focusing on a different purpose for the same topic.

HW:(1) Do your own quick write on the topic for which you came up with 18 topics. Write six different times (for about five minutes each time), each time writing about the topic with one of the six different purposes we discussed during class. Do a quick-write for each of the six purposes like I did in class. BRING A PRINTOUT OF YOUR SIX QUICK-WRITES TO CLASS ON MONDAY. (2) Study BR rules.

M, 8/23 (all): (1) We discussed the BR . (2) Next, we went over some of the difficulties and benefits associated with your quick-writes. (2) We then learned about appositive phrases (APP from now on) by doing some in-class writing and then reading about them in the text.

HW:(1) Do APP practice set #1 as explained in class: type the scrambled letters in the best order, type the resulting sentence based on your unscrambling, and underline the APPs in each sentence. BRING A PRINTOUT TO CLASS ON WEDNESDAY. (2) Study BR rules.

W, 8/25 (evens): (1) We discussed the BR and the new subject-verb agreement rule . (2) Next, we went over APP practice set #1. (3) We learned how to do APP practice sets 2 and 3; Mr. Alig emailed us the template to use for each exercise. (4) We then did practice writing with APPs.

HW:(1) Do APP practice sets 2 and 3 as explained in class. BRING A PRINTOUT TO CLASS ON FRIDAY. (2) Study BR rules.

W, 9/1 (evens): (1) We went over our BR. (2) We went over your responses to "Putting the APP to Work." (3) Next, we did some in-class writing in order to introduce the new technique we will be working with: participial phrases. (4) We then began the participial phrases unit in the book.

HW:(1) Do P/PP (present participial phrase/past participial phrase) practice set #1: type the letters in the proper order. Type the sentence that results from the letters' being in the order in which you have placed them. Place the Ps/PPs in bold. For #1, 2, 3, and 4 you must go one step further: unscramble each sentence three times, each time placing the P/PP in a different sentence position (sentence opener, subject-verb split, and sentence closer). Identify which of the three positions works and which do/does not. For #5-8, follow the same procedure we used for APP practice set #1. Bring a printout of this practice set to class on Friday. (2) Study BR rules.

F, 9/3 (evens): (1) We went over our new BR. (2) Next, we went over and discussed P/PP practice set #1. (3) We then did some more practice writing with Ps/PPs.
